This papier-mâché bust of Frida Kahlo is a Dia de los Muertos figure, handmade by master artist from Mexico City, Joel Garcia. She stands at 10″ tall, is approx. 6″ deep, and measures 8.5″ from elbow to elbow. She has beautiful paper flowers braided into her hair like a crown, a lovely decorated blusa, and she stands proudly and securely on any flat surface. A wonderful homage to the inspiring Frida Kahlo – an artist, a feminist, a strong survivor, and a role model for many young women today.

Joel Garcia is an extraordinary artist who specializes in papier-mâché sculpture and painting. He is based out of  Mexico city, and focuses on dia de los muertos-themed works, celebrating all kinds of creatures – animals, pop stars, historical figures, and biblical characters. Every Fall, he travels to the USA for a residency at Nomad, and teaches a workshop on his craft.

El Dia de los Muertos, also known as “All Souls Day” or “Day of the Dead”, is a holiday that is celebrated in Mexico on November 2nd. Cemeteries are decorated, special food is prepared, and people honor the lives of their lost loved ones with altars and offerings. It is meant to be a joyous celebration of life and remembrance.
